The title of this post is lie number one of a litany of lies to be found on the Internet. You are NOT going to learn how to rewire a vintage phone. I know this from experience. I have a number of oddities hidden in my basement. You may wonder why I care whether or not a relic of a phone with an actual dial on it works or not. I like old phones. I like old things. And I particularly like old thing that can still be used. So some time before Christmas I decided to look up how to rewire some of my old phones with their vintage 3 wires … … to a modern phone line. Nobody really knows how the wiring works.
About Phone Wire Color Coding
At first glance all the colored wires associated with your telephone wiring may seem confusing. Although there is an industry standard for use of the colored conductors, the truth is any two conductors regardless of their color will work as long as the same two are hooked up at each end. Having said that I do recommend that whenever it is possible, stay with the industry standard color code.

Since a standard telephone only needs one pair of wires per line, we can send up to 4 lines on each cable. This offers a lot of flexibility and saves time and labor running phone cables in a multi-line system.

Occasionally homes wired in the 70s had bundles using up to the red-blue pair giving capability of up to 6 phone lines. Sometimes these bundles of wires may be covered with an outer jacket or sheath which may be gray, brown or white.
